Birds of Prey & Other Spring Migrants
Jeff Maugans
April 19 $295.95
The diversity of raptors in Rocky Mountain National Park is high, particularly around Lumpy Ridge and Deer Ridge during spring migration through the Park. One can usually see in a day's time golden eagle, northern goshawk, prairie falcon, red tailed hawk, Cooper's hawk, osprey, peregrine falcon, Swainson's hawk, American kestrel and, at times, the bald eagle along with other migrating species such as white-faced ibis, pelican, American avocet, and a variety of waterfowl. Participants will learn about the ecology of these birds and acquire identification skills. Jeff will also discuss why and how climbing closures are placed on certain cliffs to protect nesting raptors.
Natures Engineers: Beavers
Jared Griscoskie
May 19, 2012 $255.95
Beavers play an extremely important part in the Rocky Mountain ecosystem. Delve into their daily lives including social structure and building of dams and lodges. Follow in the footsteps of Enos Mills around Estes Park as we visit beaver colonies described in his book In Beaver World. Explore the interplay of the beaver with other species like aspens, willows, elk, trout, birds and even wolves. Each species is in some way connected to the survival and health of the beaver in Rocky Mountain National Park. As the day wanes, observe beavers as they begin their evening's activities.
Summer Birding with a Naturalist
Jeff Maugans June 21, 28; July 5, 12, 19, 26; Aug. 2, 2012 $225.95
Spend the morning discussing the migration, nesting, habitat, conservation, natural history and ecology of mountain birds. Have fun in the field while learning to identify, enjoy and appreciate birds. Participants will learn to identify as many species as possible both by sight and by songs/calls. By learning to identify birds by sound, you can develop a good sense of what birds are nearby.
Secret Places in Rocky Mountain National Park
Kevin J. Cook June 29; July 20; Aug. 17, 2012 $225.95
A prudent sense of safety keeps us looking at the ground as we walk, and trails trick us into looking straight ahead to see what's coming. The consequence of looking down and looking ahead is that we miss what's around. Places become something we pass through so offhandedly that we - person and place - become ephemeral to each other. Marvelous old trees, spectacular wildflower assemblages, hard-to-find animals, and other wildlife surprises can remain hidden in secret places near the trails that allow us to pass through. In the Secret Places seminars we will explore just off familiar beaten paths with a mind for discovering the wildlife richness that bestows character on place.
Ponds & Streams of Rocky Mountain National Park
Kathy Brown July 25, 2012 $295.95
Who lives in and along the waterways of Rocky Mountain National Park? Spend the day wading in the streams and ponds as we study stream life, the importance of riparian areas and the vital role of water in this western mountain landscape.
Hike with a Naturalist: Timber Lake
Jeff Maugans Aug. 31, 2012 $255.95
Explore the western slope of Rocky Mountain National Park on this all-day hike through pine forests and rich alpine meadows. Elk and deer are often spotted along this trail as dense foliage provides ample grazing for these large mammals. Picturesque Timber Lake provides beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and abundant wildflowers can be identified in the adjacent meadows.
Hike with a Naturalist: Pear Lake
Jeff Maugans September 7, 2012 $255.95
Explore the Wild Basin area on this adventurous hike which leads through pine forests, lush meadows, and past still lakes. Participants will view the Continental Divide through a burn area, already full of tree and wildflower re-growth. Continue hiking past Finch Lake, a wonderful backcountry fishing spot, to the basin surrounding Pear Lake where awe-inspiring views will captivate even the most seasoned hiker.
Hike with a Naturalist: Fern & Odessa Lakes
Jeff Maugans September 14, 2012 $255.95
Learn along the way as you hike from Bear Lake on one of the most spectacular treks in the Park. Walk through aspen forest along the common Flattop/Odessa Gorge Trail. Learn about the beautiful and awe-inspiring Odessa Gorge, and enjoy the magnificent scenery of Odessa and Fern Lakes. Descend past Fern Falls and The Pool, and walk along the Big Thompson River to the trailhead. Three-quarters of this hike is level or downhill. Participants will be shuttled back to their original parking spot.
Hike with a Naturalist: Boulder Brook Loop
Jeff Maugans September 21, 2012 $255.95
This spectacular loop affords views of the Continental Divide, rushing waterfalls and lush aspen and pine forests as participants wind their way through a subalpine ecosystem on this day-long hike which traverses the Glacier Gorge, North Longs Peak, Boulder Brook, and Glacier Creek trails in Rocky Mountain National Park. Autumn foliage will be prevalent as participants enjoy this memorable journey in a less-traveled yet beautiful area in Rocky Mountain National Park.
